Craft Beer & TV, A Little Respect Please!
As a craft beer guy, I like that we’re seeing more and more craft beer references on TV. The problem? It’s still mostly generic references. Brands shown are largely macro crafty and not real craft beer and/or blatant product placement.
Now, don’t get me wrong, any improvement is good, but here’s a couple of things that we need to work on.
“I’ll Have A Beer”
Have you ever seen anyone ever walk into a bar, pub, tavern, saloon, bowling alley, speakeasy, club, casino or illegal underground fight and order a “beer”? NO! No, No, No, No, No! If you can’t have your character order a specific brand, at least have them order a specific style.”I’ll have the IPA, brown ale, pilsner, stout, bourbon barrel aged whatever….” Are you following me here?
RIGHT OUT OF THE BOTTLE!
On a new TV show a character gets a box delivered to her that’s not hers. She takes it to where it belongs and he’s excited. It’s a rare sour and only a limited number of cases are made each year. That’s great, right? A rare sour craft beer reference can be! Well, she’s never heard of it. He pops the top on 2 bottles, hands her one. They both swig a rare, limited edition sour RIGHT OUT OF THE BOTTLE! RIGHT OUT OF THE BOTTLE! A true beer lover would have gone into the house and brought out a couple of tulips!
This may seem small to a non-craft drinker. Maybe even the casual craft drinker. However, anyone that has tracked down a rare sour and can afford to buy a couple of cases and have it shipped to their house would never under any circumstance SWIG IT RIGHT OUT OF THE BOTTLE! It turns out that she doesn’t like it and spits it out. There’s the typical sitcom witty banter about it and then they go into the house. Cut to her in the living room and he comes out of the kitchen with a glass of something else for her to drink. The problem? He went into the kitchen, he brings her something else to drink IN A GLASS yet he is still knocking back his rare sour RIGHT OUT OF THE BOTTLE!
Details, Get ‘Em Right!
In the grand scheme of things, this may seem small. However, I have family and friends that count bullets for realism while watching their shows. Some will immediately quit watching a show if the phone # starts with 555. So, I don’t think I’m being too nitpicky here.
All of these movies and TV shows hire consultants for realism, how about we get ALL the details right. Not every beer can be ordered by saying,”Beer”, not all beer is pale yellow and poured into a beer mug and if your character can open a bottle of wine and pour it into a glass, why does all beer have to be chugged right out of the bottle? I think your character could also have proper beer glassware in the cabinet and actually know how to pour it. They have WINE glasses after all!
So, to you TV producers out there, if you need someone to ensure accuracy and proper beer etiquette on your shows and be paid extremely well for doing a ridiculously small amount of work, I’m your guy. Until then, these tips are free, have at ’em and darn it, GET IT RIGHT!
